GIA unveils comprehensive cultured pearl report
The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recently introduced the Cultured Pearl Classification Report, which provides clients with extensive information on cultured Akoya, South Sea and Tahitian pearls.
This dossier-sized report includes a detailed classification of “unmodified” pearls based on the GIA 7 Pearl Value FactorsTM – size, shape, colour, luster, surface, nacre and matching – as well as a digital image of the goods.
“It is specifically and exclusively for the three major types of cultured pearls, with no identification or advanced testing of the pearls being performed,” said GIA.
If GIA gemmologists find the specimens were modified by treatment or do not belong to one of the accepted pearl types, the service will automatically change to a pearl identification report.
Clients may submit loose, mounted or strung pearls, or those in fixed jewellery layouts. Up to 10 related loose pearls may be submitted per report, according to GIA.
