The index that tracks all fancy color diamond prices rose by 1.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, with the biggest increases among yellows.

The New York-based Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF) said white diamond prices fell by 2.8 per cent during the same period.

Yellow diamonds, across all sizes and intensities, showed the biggest rise, at 2.1 per cent. Pinks were up 1.1 per cent and blues were virtually static, up just 0.2 per cent.

It was yellow stones that drove much of the Fancy Color Diamond Index's increase of 3.9 per cent during 2022.

The single biggest rise was among 10-carat fancy vivid yellow diamonds, up 4.8 per cent.  The biggest fall was  1-carat fancy blues, down by 1.4 per cent.

Ephraim Zion, a member of the FCRF board said: "The price increases reflect the strong demand of yellow diamonds on the market as well as the strong competition in rough tenders.

"Despite some declines this quarter in White prices, Fancy diamonds are continuing to show stable demand."

The FCRF tracks pricing data for fancy color diamonds of all sizes and intensities in Hong Kong, New York, Geneva and Tel Aviv.
