The Pinterest Predicts Report Sheds Light On Possible 2022 Jewelry Trends
“Before you see it everywhere, see it here” reads the introduction to Pinterest’s eighth annual Pinterest Predicts report. “People use Pinterest to plan for the future. That means we know what’s next,” reads a statement from the platform. “In fact, 8 out of 10 of our predictions for 2021 came true. This isn’t another year-end trend report. This is a not-yet-trending report—a window into the future, from the place where people go to plan it. Let’s look forward to 2022.”
The social media platform’s biggest trend report yet, 2022’s edition is crammed with more than 175 trends predicted to be big in the coming year, from travel and food to fashion and well-being. Interestingly, the report kicks off with a jewelry twist, in a trend Pinterest has labeled “Be jeweled.”
Though the trend is about more than jewelry—crystal eye makeup and a pedicure with rhinestones are some of the top searches—there are traditional (ish) jewelry items listed too (“ear curation” is a notable search term). “Gen Z is driving a trend toward accessories that goes way beyond the basic earring, cuff, or layered necklace,” reads the report. “They’re getting creative and accessorizing the whole body, from tooth gems to crystal eye embellishments.”
The report also details some search terms by region. For example, according to some of its data, lip piercings, cross earrings, and eccentric jewels are all predicted to be popular in Mexico for 2022.
The best part of Pinterest’s report is the section where it offers advice on how brands can capitalize on their trends, even splitting the company types into categories (beauty, fashion, food and beverage, parenting brands, and more). It would make sense to read through and see how the advice can be applied across a number of social platforms, not just Pinterest.
“Maybe it’s a sign of the times, but people are more into clocks and watches than ever,” the report says of its “Hot horology” trend. “Oversized clocks as decor, old-school watch bracelets, and luxury men’s watches will define 2022 style, particularly for Gen X and boomers.” And some said watches were going the way of the dodo once smart phones came along! Looks like it might be the right time to beef up that timepiece showcase.
“Hellenistic revival” incorporates a number of trending search terms related to inspiration from ancient Greece. One of the most popular search terms is “ancient Greek jewelry,” paving the way for both antique and antique-inspired designs.
Maybe one of the most relevant trends to our industry is “Pearlcore,” a not-at-all-surprising nod to the rise of pearls in unexpected places (including on men). In fact, “pearl necklace men” is one of the top-trending search terms, alongside “pearl ring simple.” People also seen to be on the lookout for pearl gowns, wedding decor, and even pearl-themed parties. Will 2022 be the year of pearl?
Other notable trends include “Dopamine dressing” (where rainbow jewelry fits perfectly into the brightly colored outfit trend); “Goth dressing,” which offers the completely opposite aesthetic; “Nailscapes,” which would provide the perfect pairing to complementary rings; “Celestial celebrations,” in which the moon and stars are the centerpiece of party themes and fashion (jewelry was already a popular avenue for this category and will likely endure); and “Bestie aesthetic,” with friendship rings and tattoos trending.
