Israel-based Sarine Technologies Ltd now offers a service that records the energy consumption and carbon footprint of a diamond along the supply chain, creating another traceability layer.

Sarine collaborated with diamond trader Andre Messika Ltd and global climate consultancy The Carbon Trust to launch CarbonVERO™, a ground-breaking solution that captures a diamond’s carbon data, which in turn, can be accessed through Sarine's Diamond Journey™ traceability platform.

Sarine stated, “This is the first time in the diamond industry where the actual measurement and calculation of energy consumption and CO2 emissions from mined rough to polished gem for each individual diamond will be provided.”

Andre Messika Ltd will apply CarbonVERO™ to all its Namibian-sourced diamonds, providing supply chain insights, according to Sarine.

The Carbon Trust has developed a Product Carbon Footprint that can track the diamond from mine to Andre Messika Ltd’s Namibian factory and the polished diamond distribution channel. This served as the blueprint for raw data-capture.

A comprehensive tracking report is generated using a combination of a dataset created by The Carbon Trust, which considers the annual input of materials, energy, transportation, processing, ancillary and waste data, with Sarine’s technologically based tracking of each individual diamond. This can be tailored to specific reporting needs, enabling B2B manufacturers and B2C diamond brands to disclose key environmental impact data to their customers.

“Tracing the carbon impact per diamond from origin to consumer was the logical next step in a trajectory of traceability programmes and diamond provenance traceability initiated five years ago,” André Messika, chairman of his namesake company, said.
