Angola mine yields 160-carat diamond
Lucapa Diamond Co Ltd has unearthed a 160-carat white diamond from the same Angolan mine where Lulo Rose – an impressive 170-carat pink rough – was earlier recovered.
The 160-carat Type IIA diamond was found in the same alluvial mining block at the Lulo diamond mine as Lulo Rose, which the company said could be the largest pink diamond found in 300 years. Lulo Rose was discovered in July 2022.
The latest white rough discovery is the 28th 100-plus-carat diamond and the sixth largest recovered at Lulo, said Stephen Wetherall, managing director at Lucapa Diamond Co Ltd. Lucapa operates the Lulo diamond mine in Angola, Africa with its partners Endiama and Rosas & Petalas. The rough was recovered by Sociedade Mineira Do Lulo (SML).
“SML transitioned to the lezirias (flood plains) towards the end of the first half of 2022. Diamond recoveries have been strong with over 100 ‘specials’ or diamonds weighing more than 10.8 carats recovered in the last two months,” revealed Wetherall.
